Fall 2018: Progress Report
Hi everyone!
We have received so many messages of support from new audience members since Main Line Today ran an article on the project in their August print issue (> ICYMI <). In our business we know better than to read the comments...but in this case, I couldn't help myself. And what I found were only positive messages of support and encouragement, of pride and excitement. These little notes go so far in fueling the work, in finding the energy to overcome setbacks and obstacles. Each one is so appreciated.
As I've shared with you in past updates, Ryan and I have encountered a lot of wonderful (and unexpected) personal milestones during our attempts to finish this film. We've had to adjust our expectations and tweak our new schedules -- and interstate domiciles -- to make time for the arduous post-production process. Nevertheless, work continues!
We have recently ticked off some long-stalled editing work and transcribed the entire film for sequencing. We are now preparing for sound engineering and scoring. If anyone knows of a talented sound engineer who would like to get their hands on this, we would welcome the help of a specialized pro!! Next we will need to add little touches like captions, credits, infographics and still images to enhance the b-roll for our interviews. Then it's show time. SO CLOSE!
Although we have not yet raised enough to create the interactive web component, we intend to apply for Tribeca's New Media Fund again, if it opens next month (it was not offered in 2017). Otherwise we have created a traditional documentary, and will have web-exclusive bonus content to release alongside the film.
Many people have asked about hosting screenings. It is my sincerest hope to screen this film all over the region. As we get closer to a firm release date, I will begin scheduling these screening dates. The good news is, I love public speaking and engaging with the community, so I will not be shy or slow with making those rounds.
To that end, I had the opportunity to present the project to the Sadsbury Township Historical Society back in the Spring. The audience and I had the chance to engage in such a rich and meaningful dialogue during the Q+A, and you could practically hear hearts opening and gears turning, old prejudices softening. It was such a prescient experience, as I could see how new audiences reacted to the content of my talk and my vision for the project and to get a feel for how the finished project will be received. It was a very encouraging glimpse into the future of Coatesville!
As a first time director, I had a lot of naive and idealistic visions for what we could accomplish during production. What I've found is that many key figures in the community have been a little skeptical of our angle...they haven't known what to make of us and have needed to 'see to believe'. It's been challenging to persuade some organizations to collaborate. Because of this, I expect that there may be a new burst of support and financial interest in the project after the film is released, and the release may be the beginning of a greater journey, rather than the end.
Regardless, I cannot wait to complete this film and share it with you all very soon.
All my best,
Sarah
